FMA provides funding to assist states and communities in implementing measures to reduce or eliminate the long-term risk of flood damage to buildings, manufactured homes, and other structures insurable under the NFIP.

  Residents that live within a 100-year floodplain (Special Flood Hazard Area) can save up to 45 percent on their premiums for required flood insurance if their community participates in the Community Rating System program (CRS), under FEMA's National Flood Insurance Program (NFIP). To generate premium discounts, the participating communities implement floodplain management activities above and beyond the minimum NFIP requirements. The greater the activities, the greater the premium discount. By following a multi-objective floodplain management approach, the communities benefit all their residents by reducing flood losses and mitigation costs and promoting public safety.
